Abstract

Abstract: The SULAM programme, Silang Budaya: Threads of Unity Colours of Malaysia, is a community engagement initiative that promotes experiential learning through music education. Implemented in Pasir Mas and Bachok, Kelantan, the programme involved university music education students in designing and conducting music workshops for community members of various age groups. Conducted in collaboration with the Jabatan Kebudayaan dan Kesenian Negeri Kelantan and Geng Wak Long, a well-known traditional music group, the programme benefited from authentic cultural input and local expertise. Participants were introduced to Kelantanese traditional instruments as well as musical traditions from other parts of Malaysia, including the caklempong from Negeri Sembilan, gambus from Johor, sape from Sarawak, and traditional instruments from Sabah. This exposure highlighted the richness and diversity of Malaysia’s multicultural musical heritage. The study examined student reflections, community feedback, and documented observations to evaluate the programme’s impact on cultural learning and understanding. The findings show that service-learning through music education enhances cultural pride, intercultural respect, and collaboration across age groups. Student participants also developed leadership, communication, and event management skills, while the community gained greater appreciation of Malaysia’s diverse musical traditions. Overall, the study demonstrates the value of community-based music education and supports the integration of culturally grounded, hands-on teaching approaches in preparing socially responsible and culturally aware future music educators.
