Abstract

Contemporary discourse on human development faces an epistemological crisis due to its heavy reliance on secular psychological and philosophical frameworks detached from revealed knowledge, leading to a fragmented understanding of human potential. Within the Islamic context, this has created a significant gap between the Qur’anic conception of the human being and the operational approaches used in human development practices. This article addresses this gap by examining Qur’anic contemplation (tadabbur) as a methodological mechanism within Islamic-based Human Development (IbHD). Using qualitative conceptual analysis and thematic synthesis of Qur’anic interaction structures alongside classical and contemporary scholarship on tadabbur, the study develops a conceptual model rather than empirical findings. The proposed model positions tadabbur as the central meaning-processing component in a taxonomy of Qur’anic engagement progressing from reception and retention to reflective meaning-making and actualization. Unlike linear developmental models, this taxonomy frames tadabbur as the dynamic interface between revelation and transformation. The conceptual findings indicate that tadabbur operates as a cognitive, spiritual, and moral mechanism that  translates revealed knowledge into awareness, orientation, and ethical embodiment, thereby facilitating gradual and integrated personal transformation. The study concludes that reinstating tadabbur as the methodological core of IbHD provides a coherent theoretical foundation for revelation-based pedagogy, holistic personal formation, and an epistemological alternative to secular models.
