Abstract

The study of Sufi-oriented poetry requires an approach that does not determine symbolic meanings solely on the basis of particular objects or images but also examines the linguistic processes through which such meanings are constructed. However, the relationship between linguistic structure, poetic imagery, and the construction of Sufi symbolic meaning requires further integrated investigation. Accordingly, this study aims to analyse the relationship between linguistic structure, poetic imagery, and the construction of Sufi symbolic meaning in Kemala’s poem Melbourne. The study employs a qualitative approach through textual analysis based on 'Abd al-Qahir al-Jurjani’s theories of al-Nazm, Poetics of Imagery, and Ma'na al-Ma'na, while a Sufi conceptual framework is employed to determine the correspondence of the symbolic meanings constructed. The findings demonstrate that linguistic structures, particularly al-Khabar, al-Af'al, al-Ijaz and al-Itnab, organise the development of meaning, which subsequently generates imagery through isti'arah, especially personification and semantic transformation. This imagery facilitates a transition from external experience to secondary meanings associated with identity, fear, inner resilience, values, love, and inner awareness. The Sufi dimension further demonstrates correspondence with mu??sabah, spiritual resilience, and the refinement of value orientation. The study concludes that Sufi symbolic meaning is progressively constructed through the interrelationship between linguistic organisation, poetic imagery, Ma'na al-Ma'na, and the overall context of the poem, rather than through the isolated identification of Sufi symbols.
