Cognitive strategy is the most popular language learning strategy (LLS) among researchers. However, research on its use in learning Arabic still needs to be done. Therefore, this study aims to measure the level of cognitive strategy use in learning Arabic and determine the most frequently used sub-strategies based on the mean score. Participants in the study consisted of 73 IPG students from Ipoh Core Islamic Education Campus. Although LLS is something that can be taught to students, Arabic educators need to know the strategies being used by students before devising further actions. In addition, the absence of an agreed inventory of Arabic learning strategies also prompted this study to be carried out. Data was collected through an online questionnaire. Questionnaire items are divided into five sections representing five cognitive sub-strategies built on the SBP model presented by Oxford (1990) and O'Malley & Chamot (1990). The findings of the study show that the level of cognitive strategy use is only at a moderate level (average min. 3.17). While the most frequently used sub-strategy is note management (min. 3.44) and the least used sub-strategy is training (2.53). The finding also show that the participants do not optimise the use of Arabic learning materials to improve their proficiency. Accordingly, the researchers suggest that Arabic educators to expose LLS to their students particularly the cognitive strategies and train them to optimise the manipulation of Arabic learning materials effectively.
