A Moraic Study of Verb Structures in the Arabic Language
Keywords:
Mora , phonology, syllable, verbs, constraints , well-formednessAbstract
Moraic theory is a minimalist non-linear theory of syllable structure, in which the mora is a timing unit in the phonology of some languages. Arabic is one of the moraic languages in which its syllabic structure is subject to many constraints that determine the well-formedness of words. In this paper, we shall shed light on these constraints that distinguish the bilateral, trilateral, and quadrilateral verbs in Arabic language. Through adopting descriptive analytical method, we shall study the verbs in kitab tasrif al-afa’al.
