Cognitive Enrichment in Serving the Semantic Structure: A Study on the Epistemological Foundations of Semiotic-Discourse Theory

Abstract

Since the beginning of the fifties of the twentieth century, a group of sciences witnessed an unprecedented development, and the conceptual semantic theory was not immune from that. In this regard, we wonder: What are the epistemological foundations that build the conceptual significance theory? How did this latter transform from a semantic theory to a cognitive semantic theory? What are the implications of the knowledge accumulation achieved on cognitive studies in general? We have set among our goals the clarification of the epistemological foundations that contributed to the formation of the conceptual semantic theory, and strengthened its theoretical and representative power. To achieve these goals, we relied on a generative theoretical framework that is in harmony with the conceptual semantic theory, and we adopted an inductive and descriptive approach, through which we were able to describe and interpret the perceptions of the sciences that formed the basis for building the conceptual semantic theory. The result that we reached is that these cognitive foundations contributed to the development of contemporary semantic research and its acquisition of scientific accuracy in dealing with linguistic and epistemological issues in general. It makes it occupy an important scientific position within the cognitive sciences as an undisputed contribution and production. We believe that this is the reason that prompted us to devote this article to approach this theory.
