Abstract

The Mualafs or also referred to as new brothers or sisters are those who are in dire need of guidance and instruction in an organized and strategic manner so that their understanding of Islam can be improved. In empowering the education of converts, peers as coach are very important to provide high motivation and encouragement. In addition, it can provide moral support through social networking activities. The objective of this study is to find out the extent to which the role of peers as coach in enhancing understanding and helping each other. Next, this study aims to see the effect of peer support in increasing motivation among converts in the classroom. This study uses an exploratory quantitative research design through a structural equation modeling (SEM) approach. A total of 250 questionnaires were distributed containing 244 questionnaires. The findings of this study show that the learning module and the sharing of classmates or ‘buddy’ can have an impact on the motivation of convert students to continue their learning activities and development in the basic sciences of Muslim. As for the dimension of the classroom environment, it is found to have no significant influence on student motivation directly, but it leads to a ‘buddy’ partnership that allows it to be a mediator to the students motivation with overall mediation. This study proposes further research in looking at whether the factors of efficient learning and learning attributes impact Muslim values that can be applied, with a more comprehensive methodology.
