Needs Analysis for the Development of an Active Learning Module of Arabic for Year Four Primary School

Abstract

The active learning method is an important element that needs to be applied by teachers in the teaching and learning of the Arabic language, especially at the primary level to attract students' interest in learning Arabic. Nevertheless, a few teachers still practice conventional teaching methods such as lectures, translations and notes. Thus, the researcher wants to develop an active learning module of Arabic language in the fourth year of primary school to help teachers who do not have a clear guidebook on the implementation of active learning activities. Before the module was developed, the researcher conducted a needs analysis using a quantitative design through a questionnaire that was distributed to 121 fourth-year Arabic language teachers in primary schools in the districts of Muallim, Batang Padang, Hilir Perak and Bagan Datuk. Data was collected through an online questionnaire using Google Form. The questionnaire instrument has two constructs that are to be assessed, namely the level of need to carry out active learning methods in the fourth-year Arabic teaching and learning and the level of need for content items, activities, materials and assessment in the content of the active learning module. The findings of the study were analyzed descriptively using SPSS software version 29.0 to find out the mean value and standard deviation for each construct. The results of the study found that the level of need to carry out active learning methods in the fourth-year Arabic teaching and learning is high with a mean value of 4.59 and the level of need for content items, activities, materials and assessment in the content of the active learning module is also high with a mean value of 4.35. Through this needs analysis study, the researcher was able to find out that the construction of the fourth-year Arabic language active learning module is very necessary for teachers to be used as a guide in the teaching and learning.
