A Comparative Analysis of Translation Methods in Interpreting the Qur'an from Arabic to Malay

Abstract

As is well known, the translation of the Quran represents an important field and a significant challenge because this field involves transferring the meaning and aesthetic values contained in the Quran to the target language. This is because translation accuracy is of utmost importance when translating the Quran, as it aims to preserve the religious and cultural meaning of the Quranic text. Therefore, this study was conducted with the aim of analyzing and comparing the translation methods used in translating the Quran from Arabic to Malay. The main objective of this study is to analyze the advantages and disadvantages of each method used in translating the Quran and their suitability and acceptability in the context of the Malay community. Additionally, this study aims to determine whether the translated texts align with the original meaning of the Quranic text. Using a qualitative approach, this study focuses on analyzing the translation methods used in three Quran translations, namely the translation by Abdullah Basmeih, the Uthmani script Quran translation by Darul Iman, and the Tafsir Fi Zilalil Quran translation. This study compares the translation methods used in the three translations with the translation theories mentioned by experts and previous studies. Based on the comparisons made, the results show that the translation methods used by translators in translating the Quran show significant differences among the different translations and reveal that the methods used are similar to general text translation methods, which include literal, interpretive, expository, mixed, sequential, and communicative translation. Based on these findings, it is evident that the differences in Quran translations and the translation methods used can significantly affect the accuracy of the translation in relation to the original meaning and cultural values contained in the Quranic text. Therefore, it is important that translators be careful in choosing the translation methods used in translating the Quran because this can impact readers' understanding of the meanings of the Quran. Additionally, it is hoped that the findings of this study will contribute to improving the quality of Quran translation and enhancing Muslims' understanding of the Quran's message in the Malay language.
