Abstract

Learning speaking skills online is one of the branches of Arabic language studies that needs to be empowered so that the advancement of technology and multimedia-assisted language learning in Malaysia is not out of date. Undoubtedly, the drastic shift to online learning mode as the new norm forces all parties to adapt as quickly as possible to ensure the sustainability of education is maintained. As a result, various difficulties are faced by students and teachers when learning Arabic speaking skills. This requires wisdom to overcome any difficulties that arise, including considering whether a learning support material and learning aids are suitable for use. This study aims to identify the need to use multimedia-based electronic modules as support materials or aids in learning basic Arabic speaking skills online. This study is a qualitative study that uses semi-structured interviews as a data collection method. A total of 12 students and 3 instructors participated in this study. Next, the interview findings were analyzed thematically using Atlas.ti software. version 8.0. The results of the study found that there are three main difficulties faced by students when learning speaking skills online, namely language constraints, technology and learning activities. At the same time, the instructor mentioned three other difficulties, which are constraints from the aspect of the lesson syllabus and study time, attention to students and student dependency. In order to overcome these difficulties, the students suggested eight improvements, while the instructor suggested a total of five improvements. In the end, all students and instructors agreed that the multimedia-based electronic module has the potential to offer the proposed solution while emphasizing the need for an electronic module to be developed specifically to help improve the quality of learning Arabic speaking skills online.
