Abstract

With ChatGPT's increasing utility in the academic field, it has become a valuable tool for language users. This study aimed to explore the motivations of Arabic language students at the International Islamic University Malaysia (IIUM) for using ChatGPT, whether these motivations were extrinsic or intrinsic. This study adopted a descriptive quantitative approach to collect the sample. The study surveyed 30 male and female students and collected data using a questionnaire created via Google Forms. The researcher then analyzed the data using the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) and employed arithmetic mean analysis. The results of the study showed that the most significant extrinsic reason for students' use of ChatGPT was the ease of access to information, while students were more likely to be intrinsically motivated when using ChatGPT, believing it could help save time and effort in searching for information. This indicates that they perceive ChatGPT not only to overcome challenges but also as a learning support tool.
