Abstract

One of the most common issues in learning the Arabic language is the weakness of students’ writing skills and the various obstacles they face in developing this skill, particularly in the areas of grammar, morphology, spelling, and semantics. This problem is widespread among learners of Arabic worldwide, not only in Malaysia. The weakness in writing skills can be attributed to several factors, most notably the complexity of Arabic grammatical and morphological rules, as well as the reliance of many educational programs on theoretical instruction without providing sufficient opportunities for practical application. In addition, the influence of learners’ mother tongues often leads to recurring linguistic errors. Although many researchers and scholars have discussed this issue, it remains one of the greatest challenges faced by learners of Arabic as a foreign language. The importance of this study lies in its focus on identifying the most common linguistic errors committed by students—grammatical, morphological, semantic, and spelling errors—along with analyzing them. The study further explores the primary causes behind these errors and the reasons for their recurrence through interviews conducted with the student sample who took the test, followed by interviews with their instructors to verify these causes and identify the solutions and measures adopted to overcome such difficulties and challenges.
