Abstract

Previous studies highlight that debate can enhance language skills, particularly speaking skills. However, there are two questions that still require further investigation. The first question concerns the extent of the Arabic language proficiency of debaters, especially in constructing sentences when presenting arguments. The second question relates to the perception of non-debating students, who view the use of Arabic in debates as challenging. On this basis, a specialized Arabic language learning module for debate purposes is deemed necessary to facilitate learning. This study aims to examine the need to develop a dedicated Arabic learning module for debate purposes. In addition, the study also seeks to obtain experts’ perspectives on the content and design for developing this module. The study employed a qualitative approach using interviews as the method of data collection. Three experts from three fields — instructional technology, debate, and Arabic language — were interviewed. The data were then transcribed and analyzed manually. The findings indicate that all respondents agree on the need to develop an Arabic learning module specifically for debate purposes, while also providing several recommendations to help make the module more effective.
