Inability of Secondary Arabic School Students to Communicate in Arabic: A Case Study in Southwestern Nigeria
Abstract
There are many Regular/Modern Arabic schools in Southwestern Nigeria as a result of the revolution led by As?Sheikh Adam Abdullah Al?Ilory in early fifties to civilize the teachers of Arabic and Islamic studies to develop their teaching from traditional to the modern regular system with the aim of equating their students with their colleagues in terms of equipping them with necessary basic knowledge of Islamic studies and Arabic speaking skill on international standard. Al?Ilory succeeded in that revolution since that time with the proposed aim until around early two thousand. However, the efforts Al?Ilory and his contemporaries were thereafter inflicted with weakness as most of the students were unable to communicate fluently in Arabic without stammering not to talk of an error free writing skill. This phenomenon if not properly addressed may lead to the former state of Arabic Education in early days of the twentieth century. Therefore, this research intends to study the factors responsible for that inability, paying serious attention to investigating the curriculum and instruction of Arabic education in addition to the challenges militating against it. The researcher adopts descript and applied method to carry out his research. The research findings state that curriculum of Arabic education in Southwestern Nigeria does not fulfil the objectives of education and the teachers lack the knowledge of methods of instruction, and sometime the unavailability of learning facilities also confirmed, in addition to the existing central aims and objective of teaching and learning of Arabic in the region on Islamic religion.
