21st Century Pedagogical Innovation: The Impact of Gamification on Motivation and Arabic Vocabulary Mastery in Primary Schools

Abstract

Arabic Vocabulary mastery constitutes a fundamental pillar in the learning of the Arabic language at the primary school level. Weak vocabulary acquisition often leads to significant challenges, including low motivation, limited student engagement, and overall poor language proficiency. In line with advancements in educational technology and innovation, interactive and innovative teaching approaches such as gamification are increasingly recognized as having strong potential to enhance both motivation and vocabulary acquisition among learners. This conceptual article aims to examine and analyze the potential of gamification as a 21st century pedagogical innovation in addressing issues related to motivation and Arabic vocabulary mastery. Based on a review of the literature, gamification elements such as rewards, achievement badges, and challenges are found to foster an engaging and holistic learning environment that captures students’ interest. A conceptual framework linking gamification with cooperative learning strategies is proposed as contribution to the field of language pedagogy, particularly in primary education. In conclusion, the shift from traditional “chalk and talk” methods to gamified approaches necessitates a transformation in the teacher’s role from a one way transmitter of information to an interactive facilitator. This transformation significantly supports the enchantment of Arabic language education in alignment with the demands of contemporary educational systems.
