Abstract

Collocation is a highly critical linguistic phenomenon in determining the level of fluency and semantic accuracy among learners of Arabic as a foreign language (AFL). However, the existing corpus of literature indicates a major academic gap in providing a systematic analysis of idiosyncratic collocations, specifically those involving verb and preposition combinations at the tertiary education level. Driven by this problem, this study was undertaken with the primary objective of compiling, analyzing, and discussing the syntactic and pedagogical implications of 50 idiosyncratic Arabic collocations frequently utilized in oral communication and academic writing. The research design employs a descriptive-qualitative approach utilizing textual content analysis of both formal and informal modern Arabic text corpora. To ensure data validity, the selected collocations underwent an expert validation process by two experienced Arabic language lecturers. The empirical findings demonstrate that mastering idiosyncratic verb + preposition collocations is exceptionally challenging because the combination of these lexical units produces a new idiomatic meaning that departs significantly from the literal definitions of its original components. This article contributes a fresh pedagogical dimension and practical guidelines to assist educators in developing structured explicit training modules to minimize inter-lingual errors among tertiary learners.
