Abstract

This study examines the variation in formulation between the active participle (Ism Al-Fail) and the past tense verb (fi’il Madhi) in the Quranic readings from a semantic perspective. It aims to identify the occurrences of this variation and explore the semantic differences resulting from the shift between the two forms in the Quranic readings, as well as to clarify the extent to which the Quranic context influences the meaning of the use of the active participle and the past tense verb. The study adopts a descriptive-analytical approach by using Mu’jam al-Qiraat to collect instances of variances found in the Quranic readings before analyzing them semantically by referring to Quranic exegesis and Arabic lexical sources. The findings reveal that the variation between the forms of Ism Fa’il and Fi’il Madhi in the Al-Quran verses and demonstrates the precision of Quranic expression. The Ism Fa’il generally conveys the meanings of permanence and continuity, whereas the fi’il Madhi indicates the occurrence and renewal of an action according to the context of the verse. The study also found that the shift between these two forms is not merely a lexical variation, but rather carries various rhetorical and semantic dimensions determined by the Quranic context, thereby highlighting the role of the context in directing meaning and manifesting the linguistic eloquence and miraculous nature of the Quran.
